CharacterWorks is a non-profit 501(c)3 after-school youth theater program offering classes, camps and productions for students age 4-19 years old. CharacterWorks started in Richmond in 2001 as an affiliate of Christian Youth Theater (CYT, Inc in San Diego, CA), and became an independent youth theater company in July 2013.
CharacterWorks is dedicated to the mission of honoring Christ, building character, and creating community through quality theater arts education and productions. We believe in pursuing the highest standards of quality in all that we do because we believe that best reflects the God we serve.
Values and Objectives
Placing the maximum worth on people and treating each individual with respect and significance.
Developing character values in individuals including commitment, discipline, confidence, and integrity.
Building a community of families through the direct involvement of each family member’s talents, interests, and abilities.
Providing a quality product without compromising a wholesome environment.
Pointing people to a life-changing relationship with God through Jesus.
CharacterWorks is a faith-based, after-school theater arts program where our families and employees can combine their love for Jesus with their love of theater. Since our inception, we have welcomed all children and families to participate in our classes, camps and shows. As an organization, we seek to love them as unconditionally as Jesus loves.
Our Statement of Faith clarifies the biblical worldview that has directed CharacterWorks since 2001, and like other faith-based organizations we must set forth the beliefs that guide the operation of our ministry. Some may not be familiar with these biblical principles revealed in scripture or may disagree with them, but the students and families who have been part of CharacterWorks have hopefully experienced the reality that our board and staff have always welcomed everyone to participate.
Our statement also reflects God's command to love one another, affording everyone “compassion, love, kindness, respect and dignity following Christ’s example." Our programs are open to all families without regard to ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or preference, learning style, talents, physical ability, political views, race, religion, socioeconomic status, or family structure.
"Always so impressed by the quality of these shows, the talented performers, and overall entertaining experience... CharacterWorks is amazing!"
Eleonora L., CWorks Patron
What are our programs?
CharacterWorks is based around three foundational programs: theatre arts classes, Broadway-style shows, and musical theatre summer camps. The purpose of all of these programs is to educate and encourage children’s gifts and talents in the arts, and to instill in them Christian values and an awareness of their relationship with God.
CORE is CharacterWorks' high school leadership program. Students in CORE train in Character, Outreach, Responsibility, and Excellence in order to lead at CharacterWorks and in their communities.
