THEATER CLASSES

A wide variety of core classes in drama, voice, dance, and specialty training are offered each semester.  Each class lasts for two-hours and runs for 9 weeks. During the final class week, a ten minute Showcase  of what they accomplished during the semester is presented by each class for the other students as well as family and friends. Every student participates in the showcase and has a chance to perform!  Students enrolled in classes are then eligible to audition for the current main-stage production.

Classes are a great way for students to gain valuable theater arts training, develop confidence and make life-long friends!

Children ages 4 -19 may register . The cost for a 9-week session is $220 per student. A $25 sibling discount is offered (second child $195, third child $170, etc.)  The $220 tuition fee includes a class t-shirt and weekly snacks.

Classes currently meet 2 different nights in the Richmond area for each 9 week session:
     Tuesdays (4:30 - 6:30 OR 6:45 - 8:45pm) at Gayton Baptist Church (West End)
     Thursdays (4:30 - 6:30 OR 6:45 - 8:45pm) at KingsWay Community Church (Midlothian)

3 ACADEMY CLASSES (Audition Only)

ACADEMY: Advanced Musical Theater (ages 12-15)
Tuesdays, 4:30-6:30pm Gayton Baptist, Instructor: Becky McNamee
This year we are excited to be expanding our Academy program by adding an Advanced Musical Theater year-long class for ages 12-15!

This new class will focus on developing the skills needed for aspiring triple threats by teaching acting, vocal and dance technique for a full year. Students will learn the basics of Stanislavski acting technique, giving them new tools to analyze a script and create interesting and believable characters. Each class will begin with a dance warm up and jazz technique in order to build their dance skills as well as their strength and flexibility. The students will also learn how to apply vocal and acting technique to songs. At fall showcase the students will present a set of dance, vocal and acting exercises that demonstrate the work they have done in class.

During the second session students will receive a monologue and song to workshop using the technique and exercises developed in the first session. Each student will have to breakdown and analyze their monologue and song, as well as work it using multiple exercises in class. The students will also continue their weekly jazz dance, including learning a jazz routine. Winter showcase will be a presentation of their monologues, songs and dance routine.

Spring session will continue their development of technique, and will culminate with an expanded showcase. The students will work together to choose a theme or topic important to the class, and they will each have their own monologue and song that they apply their work to. The students will not only continue their jazz technique, but will help to choreograph a piece based on the theme. The final showcase will be a 30 minute compilation of pieces that the students have worked around their chosen theme. This 30 minutes showcase will be presented at the end of showcase both Tuesday and Thursday night.

The Advanced Musical Theater Performance Academy will meet from 4:30 - 6:30 on Tuesday nights during each of CharacterWorks' three 2016-2017 class sessions. Those interested in auditioning for the Advanced Musical Theater Academy class should submit a resume, a short essay sharing why he/she is a good candidate for the class, and a video of the student performing a one minute song and one minute monologue (see monologue choices link at the top of the page) no later than June 25th. All materials should be put in a dropbox and sent to Rebecca McNamee and Brooke Abrahamsen at rebeccadaymcnamee@gmail.com and brooke@cworkstheater.org. Students will be notified of their acceptance status June 29th and will be given 24 hours to accept or decline their spot. The cost of the class will be CharacterWorks' class rate of $220 per session plus an additional one-time $45 production fee for the year to be used towards an accompanist and additional material for the final showcase.

ACADEMY: Shakespeare Performance (ages 12-19)
Thursdays, 6:45-8:45pm Kingsway, Instructor Alana Smith
In this new Academy class, students will gain more acting experience by adding Classical Acting to their repertoire! Every performer should have skills in acting Shakespeare and studying the bard’s plays will sharpen skills in both performing on stage and academics in the classroom. This is a great foundational acting class for any student to learn the characters, stories, and poetry that have fascinated audiences and actors alike since the 1590s.

In session one, students will have an introduction to the classical Shakespearean technique of “Acting-on-the-line” and will learn the plot of some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. For showcase, students will perform monologues and scenes from Shakespearean comedies and tragedies.

In session two, students will be cast in and begin work on a full length Shakespeare play. They will cover skills like script and poetry analysis, stage combat, Linklater speech and voice technique, Stanislavski and Saint-Denis’ acting technique, and will even learn to dance a jig! Showcase for the winter session will include scene selections and excerpts from the chosen Shakespeare play, and a sample of some of the technique and exercises taught in class.

During the spring session students will build upon all their new classical acting skills as they rehearse, block, and fully stage the Shakespeare play, culminating in at least two full performances. Alana also hopes to find a few outdoor spaces to take the show on a tour around town!

The Shakespeare Performance Academy will meet from 6:45 - 8:45pm on Thursday nights during each of CharacterWorks' three 2016-2017 class sessions. Those interested in auditioning for the Shakespeare Performance Academy class should submit an acting resume and a video of the student performing one to two minutes of a Shakespearean monologue (see monologue choices at link on the top of the page) no later than June 25th. All materials should be put in a dropbox and sent to Alana Smith and Brooke Abrahamsen at AlanaCSmith@me.com and brooke@cworkstheater.org. Students will be notified of their acceptance status by June 29th and will be given 24 hours to accept or decline their spot. The cost of the class will be CharacterWorks' class rate of $220 per session plus an additional one-time $45 production fee for the year to be used toward additional material for the final showcase.

ACADEMY: Advanced Acting (ages 15-19)
Tuesdays, 6:45-8:45pm Gayton Baptist, Instructor: Becky McNamee
This year we are also excited to continue our Academy Advanced Acting Class for students ages 15-19 who are looking for a new challenge in their actor training. The Academy class will begin the fall session studying Constantin Stanislavski and Stella Adler to develop acting technique, character development and script analysis. The class will also spend some time focusing on voice and movement training for the actor. Each student will be given a monologue and scene at the beginning of the fall session, which they will use to put their new techniques into practice. The students will present these monologues and scenes during the fall class showcase.

During the second session students will continue with expanded exercises from Stanislavski and Adler, as well as technique and theory from Sanford Meisner. In the second session the students will be given their casting for a full length play. This session students will have the opportunity begin their script analysis and character development for the spring play. Students will also workshop scenes from the play using exercises from the techniques they are learning, giving them time to explore technique and character before being given blocking. The winter showcase will be a sample of scenes and exercises that the students have workshopped throughout the session.

Spring session will be rehearsal for the end of the year play. Blocking rehearsals will begin Week 1 of spring session or Week 8 of the winter session in order to give the class plenty of time to work with the characters and technique developed throughout the year. There will be a few extra rehearsals added for lead characters and full cast tech rehearsals. The Academy Class will culminate in at least 2 performances of a full length play on May 6 at 7pm and May 7 at 7pm. Classes after the play will focus on how to apply the techniques learned to future projects and auditions.

The Advanced Acting Academy will meet from 6:45 - 8:45 on Tuesday nights during each of CharacterWorks' three 2016-2017 class sessions. They will also have tech rehearsals for their play May 2-4 and May 6 & 7. Due to the expanded volume of material and performance of a full play, students should consider the at home work and attendance commitments before applying. There will be no conflicts allowed during rehearsals May 2-4 and from 1-10pm May 6 and 7. Those interested in auditioning for the Academy class should submit a resume, a short essay sharing why he/she is a good candidate for the class, and a video of the student performing either one 2 minute monologue or two contrasting 1 minute monologues (see monologue choices at the top of the page) no later than June 25th. The play will be selected after students are accepted into the class, and will be announced by the first week of classes. The cost of the class will be CharacterWorks' class rate of $220 plus an additional $45 production fee per session due to the additional expenses (rights, facilities, sets) of producing a full length play.
